First Zika case in the Bahamas

The Bahamian Authorities are reporting the first case of Zika Vius (ZIKAV) in the archipelago.

According to Bahamas Health Minister Dr. Michael Perry, a New Providence resident contracted the Zika Virus while traveling to Jamaica.

Zika, a mosquito-borne virus, has been spreading across the Americas since last year. The Zika Virus causes mild illness in most people, but can lead to severe brain-related birth defects (Encephalitis) if women are infected during pregnancy.

WHO provides advice regarding 2016 Olympics and Zika virus

The World Health Organization (WHO) has released a formal public health advisory for competitors and sports fans attending the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.

In the opinion of the WHO, there is no increased risk of spreading the Zika virus, as Brasil is only one of 60 countries affected by the Zika virus to date. The WHO public health advice can be found here.
